Magnifiers and Low Vision Aids

Often the ‘go to’ when we are diagnosed with an eye condition is magnifiers and low vision aids, but did you know it is important to be assessed for your magnifier to make sure it is the right one for you, your vision and the task that you are doing?

Magnifier Top Tips

Tip 1 – Technique

During your Low Vision Assessment you will be given advice and information about the right technique to use with your magnifier. Follow this technique as much as possible as this will help you to make the most out of your low vision aid.

Tip 2 – Batteries

I know this sounds simple, but if you have started to notice that your illuminated magnifier isn’t as effective as it once was, the first thing to check is the batteries. If you have been using the same batteries for a long time, the light can become dimmer and duller, so why not try changing the batteries as a first step before asking for a reassessment.

Tip 3 – Buy a clipboard

Another simple tip but once you try a trusty clipboard, you won’t be without it. Try resting a letter/magazine on the clipboard and bring it up to your magnifier/your eye until it comes in to focus. This will save you a lot of backache and stop the document you are trying to read from folding, making it a lot easier to read.

Tip 4 – Regularly clean your magnifier

We know this sounds obvious but over time your magnifier will get a bit dusty and blurry which will have a huge impact on its effectiveness, every week or so give your magnifier lens a clean.

Tip 5 – Setting up your environment

Things to consider that can have a huge impact are:

  • Lighting – Don’t just rely on natural light, think about how well lit the room is. Daylight bulbs are really effective in areas where you are doing tasks such as eating, cooking and reading.
  • Posture – Try not to lean forward and block out the light, sit in a chair with a back
  • Glare – Sit in an area that will avoid glare as this can have an impact on reading

Tip 6 – If in doubt, ask

Low Vision Professionals can troubleshoot with you, explore different magnifiers and explore different techniques.
