Many of the people we support in getting online say they feel intimidated by the idea of using technology due to concerns about scams and keeping their personal details safe. On this Safer Internet Day, we want to reassure you that there are plenty of steps you can take to protect yourself online, and we’re here to give you the tools to do so.

Tips for Staying Safe Online

1. Check for a Secure Connection

When visiting websites, check that the site has a secure connection. You can do this by clicking the small icon to the left of the URL (web address) to view site details if you are on a computer. If you are using an Apple device with VoiceOver, tapping on the address bar will prompt VoiceOver to confirm if the site is secure.

2. Shop from Reputable Sources

If you are shopping online, order from trusted retailers. If you come across a company you haven’t heard of before, Google reviews to check what others say about them. Be particularly cautious of ads and links on social media platforms such as Instagram or Facebook, as they may lead to fraudulent sites.

3. Use Strong and Unique Passwords

Avoid using the same password across different websites. A strong password should include a mix of numbers, letters, and punctuation. You can check your password strength using online tools like “How strong is my password?” to ensure better security.

4. Verify Unfamiliar Messages and Emails

If you receive a text message or email from an unknown sender, check their phone number or email address carefully. Signs of a scam include:

  • Unnamed mobile numbers
  • Email addresses with random letters or from free services like Gmail or Outlook
  • Multiple misspellings or unusual grammar
  • Unexpected links or urgent requests for personal details

If you are unsure, contact the company the message claims to be from using official contact details from their website.

5. Keep Your Devices Updated

Regular software updates help protect your device by improving security. You can check for software updates in your device settings, even if automatic updates are enabled. You can also set your device to notify you whenever a new update is available.
